🌿 Our Story — Gemma & Mark
Eighteen years ago, we met in Gran Canaria and fell in love.
From weekend escapes to castle visits, countryside walks, festivals, concerts and even paintballing with friends — we’ve always shared a love for adventure, making memories and, most of all, bringing people together. Hosting family and friends has always been one of our greatest joys.
Life was busy — Mark working as an electrician, Gemma as a social worker — and then it became beautifully busier with the arrival of our first child.
But somewhere between the long days and the fast pace of everyday life, we realised something: we wanted to slow down. We wanted space. Fresh air. A different rhythm. A better way of living for our daughter.
So we began searching for a new chapter — alongside Mark’s parents, on what became a true family adventure. Without them, none of this would have been possible.
With Mark’s dad having grown up in Plymouth, there was always a strong pull towards Devon. And before long, we found it — the perfect place in Calverleigh. Somewhere rural and peaceful, yet full of potential to create something of our own.
That’s how Buzzards Retreat was born.
What started as a dream has grown into something incredibly special. Watching guests fall in love with the quiet life, the rolling views, and the wildlife that surrounds us has been the greatest reward. The buzzards soaring overhead, the stillness, the sense of escape — it’s everything we hoped to share.
And recently, we welcomed another beautiful baby, making us a family of four who now get to explore this countryside together.
Buzzards Retreat isn’t just a holiday let.
It’s the life we chose.

When we first opened our luxury holiday home, the name came to us in a blur of excitement and exhaustion. We called it Bradleigh Down Holidays — practical, sensible, and tied to the place we call home. At the time, we were preparing to welcome our second child into the world. Life was beautifully chaotic. Sleep was scarce, our to-do lists were endless, and creativity took a back seat to simply getting through each day.
The name made sense on paper. Bradleigh Down is where we are, after all. But as the weeks passed and we welcomed guests through the door, something never quite settled. The name didn’t reflect the feeling of the place. It didn’t capture the stillness of the mornings, the golden hush of the fields at dusk, or the way time seems to slow the moment you arrive. Most of all, it didn’t feel like us. It felt rushed — chosen in a season when our heads were full and our hearts were elsewhere.
As life found its rhythm again, we began to notice what had always been there.
High above the rolling countryside, buzzards circle effortlessly on warm currents of air. They soar wide and free before gently returning to the fields that surround us. Their call carries across the valley — wild, peaceful, grounding. Guests often pause mid-conversation just to watch them glide overhead. It’s one of those small but powerful reminders that here, you are truly wrapped in nature.
And that’s when it clicked.
This isn’t simply a place defined by a map. It’s a retreat. A sanctuary. A place to breathe deeply, to wander through open countryside, to wake to birdsong and sleep beneath vast starlit skies. The buzzards have always been part of that story — a quiet symbol of freedom, perspective, and calm.
So Bradleigh Down Holidays became Buzzards Retreat.
A name that feels like exhaling.
A name that reflects the land, the wildlife, the peace.
A name that feels like coming home — not just to us, but to everyone who stays.
Sometimes the right name takes time. And sometimes, just like the buzzards above, you need a little space and clarity before you find where you’re meant to land.
